The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is canceled this year in response to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers announced on Thursday.
The festival, originally scheduled from April 23 to May 3, was postponed in March until the fall. Today, the organizers announced that this year's festivities are canceled together.
"With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to evolve unpredictably and out of prudence for the health and safety of our community, including musicians, fans, participants and staff, Jazz Fest 2020 will not happen not this fall, as previously announced, "the statement said.
"This conclusion is drawn after lengthy deliberation. It takes something really important to disrupt a 50-year-old New Orleans tradition as special as the Festival, but we firmly believe that the wisest right now is to give more time to the situation. " Stabilize. We thank you all for your patience as we have considered all the questions necessary to make this difficult decision. "
The news comes two days after Mayor LaToya Cantrell said New Orleans festivals should be canceled by 2020, one day after the Essence Culture Festival was canceled, and a few hours after Governor John Bel Edwards said at a press conference, "We will continue to see new cases throughout the year." Yesterday, the mayor extended the order to stay in the town house until May 16.
The organizers plan to organize the festival from April 22 to May 2 of next year.
